The Story of “Mama Sarah”
My name is Mandy Anderson, and I am the face behind Mama Sarah. This journey began in 2017 when I felt a profound call to support refugees being resettled in the USA. Since that time, refugees have entered my heart, and I’ve dedicated myself to raising awareness and providing support where possible.
The United States of America has long been a beacon of hope for those seeking a safe place to call home. Shortly after I started my solo refugee advocacy work, I was given the name "Mama Sarah" by Congolese refugees. Each time I arrived at their apartment complex, I would hear, “Mama Sarah is here!” It brought me immense joy. And still does.
In October 2023, I accepted the title of Mrs. USA Woman of the Universe and traveled to Dubai to represent the United States in an international beauty pageant. My platform focused on refugee advocacy, and more specifically, calling on people to “look into your hearts and remove animosity towards any group of people.”
I have cherished my time with local refugees in the Salt Lake City, Utah area, learning their stories and becoming part of their families. I love speaking about them, helping others learn to love them, and breaking barriers of misunderstanding and prejudice.
During my reign as Mrs. USA, I have worked tirelessly to bring awareness to other refugee organizations in Utah and around the world. I planned to start an organization to fill the gaps I observed over the past 7 years. Mama Sarah will help meet the periodic physical needs of refugees being resettled in Utah.
However, in July 2024, a Congolese refugee family I’ve grown to love traveled back to Africa. They found many orphans in the village where their family now lives in Uganda after fleeing Congo. They are not in a refugee camp due to the long wait for refugee status and the harsh conditions in the camps.
Upon returning to Utah, they told me about the orphans in their village. They asked for financial help to create 2 micro orphanages(one in Congo and one in Uganda, where many are fleeing) with a proper caretaker, home, beds, hygiene items, clothes, food, security, and educational opportunities.
My heart is all in. They showed me photos and videos of these precious children, and I promised myself and God that I would do everything in my power to bring safety, food, and a better life to these orphans. I know I am just one person, but with the support of friends, family, and loving supporters, we can change the entire course of these children’s lives. One meal, one mattress, and one shirt at a time, we can make a difference.
I know we can do this with God’s help. He loves these children because they are His. He will help them as we step up and do our part.
Love you all!
Mandy Anderson
Change the course of a child’s life, one donation at a time.
This is a video of recent trip my Congolese friends made to Uganda to visit their family who has fled the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They found many orphans in the village with their family. And when they returned back home to the USA, asked me to please help them open a home for these children.
Here you see some of the children laughing as my friend shared her lunch and soda with the them. They are precious in the sight of God. As soon as she asked me if I could help her, I immediately thought, “I will do that. God will help us.”
I hope you will join us. There is nothing we can’t do. Can you imagine the difference it will make in the life of one child, just to have food and security. To have protection of caregivers. If through this entire endeavor, we change the course of one child’s life…just one, it will have been well worth it. But I know with your help, we can nourish, strengthen and support MANY. Thank you for being here.
